Our volunteer program is designed for horse lovers who want to experience real life at a working riding school in South Africa - not just the highlights, but everything that goes into it.
From the moment you arrive, you become part of the daily rhythm of the yard. Some days are busy, some are more relaxed, but every day revolves around the horses. It’s hands-on, sometimes a little chaotic, and incredibly rewarding - a real taste of life at a busy yard.
Volunteers are involved in all aspects of day-to-day life at the yard. You’ll help care for the horses, assist with lessons, and get stuck into whatever needs doing.
Grooming and preparing horses for lessons.
Assisting during lessons.
Exercising and schooling horses
Tack cleaning and equipment care
General yard duties, including pasture management and keeping things running smoothly
You won’t just be watching from the sidelines - you’ll be getting your hands dirty! And yes - there will be riding.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or a more experienced rider, you’ll have the opportunity to take lessons, ride regularly, and improve your skills while working with a variety of horses.
For those wanting a more structured learning experience, we also offer an optional Equine Groom Training Program.
This program is designed for riders who want to build practical, hands-on skills and gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to care for and turn out horses in a professional yard environment. Training takes place naturally as part of the day-to-day rhythm of the yard, with guidance and demonstrations along the way. You’ll learn the fundamentals of working as an equine groom, as well as the basics of yard management.
At the end of your stay, participants who successfully complete the program will receive a Bay Riding Club – Level 1 Equine Groom Certificate of Completion, recognising their practical skills and hands-on experience.
To ensure the best experience for both volunteers and the horses, we ask that participants meet the following:
-
Minimum stay of 2 weeks (we recommend 5–8 weeks to get the most out of the experience)
-
Aged between 18–35
-
Positive attitude and willingness to be part of a small, hardworking team
-
Reasonably fit and comfortable with physical, outdoor work
Horse experience is not required - beginners and experienced riders are both welcome, as training and guidance are provided throughout your stay.
For those who would like to ride, the maximum rider weight is 85kg, to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of the horses.
Volunteers stay at our guesthouse, 113 on Robberg (soon to be renamed Salty Seahorse), located in the heart of Plettenberg Bay - just 10 minutes from the yard, with daily transport provided.
Accommodation is shared with fellow volunteers, creating a fun, social environment where everyone quickly becomes part of the team.
We provide daily breakfast and home-cooked dinners, along with a stocked pantry so you can prepare and pack your own lunches. Laundry is taken care of, and rooms are serviced twice a week to keep everything comfortable during your stay.
Life outside the yard is just as important as the time spent in it. Volunteers are welcome to join organised outings and activities - from local hikes and exploring the area to relaxed social evenings, games nights, and our favourite tradition: Friday Braai Days.
At the end of your stay, volunteers who have successfully completed the program will receive a Bay Riding Club Certificate of Completion, recognising their time, effort, and contribution.
